Eyes lost
in a kind of self-propelled animalistic fervor, the creature poses atop a hollow
ball, which contains another ball (carved from inside - how's that for skill?),
symbolising a peaceful life. Each detail rendered perfectly from a single piece
of selected suar wood (a tropical hardwood), taken from sustainable forests.
With its sharp fangs and menacing pose, the sculpture convincingly depicts a
"vigor dragon," the traditional guardian of Gods, according to ancient
Balinese beliefs.
Beautifully
carved, with intricate detailing, this really is an outstanding piece of work.
