The characteristic tight curls, elongated ears and the eyes closed in meditation, all suggest the serenity of enlightenment; the hand raised with palm facing outwards and index finger forming a circle with the thumb, is one of the Buddhist postures (mudras) that can easily be identified by the position of the hands - in this case, the Gesture of Teaching (Vitarka).
This is a stunning statue, beautifully hand carved from the warm and close-grained wood known as suar or rain tree wood, which is grown as a sustainable crop. This Buddha statue has been carved specifically for the Buddha of Plenty - we really are a mass-produced free zone! Once the carving is finished, the wood is then oiled and waxed before being shipped to us from Indonesia. After being allowed to settle (at least three months), a final coat of beeswax is applied by us, and then polished before being carefully packed.
